<p><i>Answer by tonaritotoro</i><br />There is a way to turn your Gameboy into a music programmer.  I have done this with something called Little Sound DJ.  I do not believe the sound in those old video games was produced with an actual keyboard synthesizer.  </p>
<p>Because the music had to fit within so many technical limitations, I believe it was all actually programmed rather than recorded.</p>
