Techno is harder beats, while trance is more relaxed with slower sounds. I love trance more…

Lords of Acid is techno, while someone like Maor Levi is trance.
Deepsky and Oceanlab are also examples of trance music.

Ambient or Ambience is an even milder form of trance…more of a relaxed feeling in the music designed to “intoxicate” you with the music.

Well as far as my experience goes and I am sure everyone else’ that appreciates these two genres, trance provides more of the “take you there” kind of feeling. Techno provides just the same feeling, but it is often associated with lyrics and the beats may differ from another. Hope this helps.

Its easy to get confused as to what techno actually is becasue “Techno” is used as a blanket term to describe any sub genre of Electronic music by people that dont realy know what they are talking about…Its mainly trance that it confused with as trance is very popular. The result is that people think “Techno” is the main genre and trance/house/hardcore etc all fall under “Techno” rather than “Electronic Music”

This is just a quick 10 Differences between Trance & techno:

    1. Techno originates in the early 80’s/ Trance in 1990
    2. Techno sounds like it was made by robots/ Trance sounds like it was made in the clouds
    3. Techno is heavily focused on pure electronic sounds/ Trance isnt
    4. Techno has very few and very short breakdowns/ Trance has longer and more breakdowns.
5.Techno is a very specific/ Trance is very unspecific
    6. Techno is heavily Rhythmic / Trance is not
    7. Techno tends not to be melodic / Trance is (very) melodic
    8. Techno is made up of short sample loops/ Trance has longer more drawn out sample loops
    9. Techno is heavily repetitive / Trance is only repetitive to a point
    10. Techno almost never has vocals / Trance does have vocals sometimes

There is limited Understanding you can get from me telling you what techno/trance is and what it sounds like…you really need to hear the difference. That said, i will post links to Wikipedia’s articles on trance and techno as they are very detailed. Dont feel you have to read it all though as some is pretty dense!

    Techno: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Techno

    Trance: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trance_music

Also…there is an electronic music guide on the web called “Ishkur’s Guide To Electronic Music” which is worth looking at as you will be able hear the differences with the samples he has on there.

    Link: http://techno.org/electronic-music-guide/

Like I said though…you really need to hear the difference which takes some time but you will start to pick things up pretty quickly!

For Starters just have a listen to these 3 techno tracks:

    Thunder by Dave Clarke
    Energy Flash by Joey Beltram
    The Bells by Jeff Mills

    …and these 3 Trance tracks:

For An Angel by Paul Van Dyk
    Netherworld by LSG
    Offshore by Chicane

There is a notable difference in them isnt there?

That a pretty brief introduction….and the links I have you should keep you going for a while….there is some more in detail stuff and cross over between the 2…but i thought that would just be confusing after everything I said above so i thought I would leave that for now!

Just ask if you want anything else clarified or want to know about techno and that in more detail!

    Hope thats helped
